🀩 Top hacks for eating on vacation

Published almost 2 years agoΒ β€’Β 2 min read

Hi Reader,

Here in my area, school gets out next week for the summer!

You know what that means? It's the official start of summer and usually vacation plans.

Anytime I have a client heading away on vacation, we always chat first about their eating strategy.

Going into vacation with a strategy can help avoid the "(Sigh) I don't know what happened, I completely overdid it, it was too hard to make healthy decisions when we were eating out, my stomach is absolutely killing me, I'm so bloated but I just figured I'd get back on board when I got home."

If this sounds familiar, though it is true that you can always get back on board, but it may save you some frustration (and discomfort) to do a little planning ahead.

I am a huge proponent of enjoying life while balancing feeling good.

If you can tolerate ice cream, then by all means grab an ice cream and savor every bite.

With a few simple strategies in place you can come home from vacation feeling relaxed and feeling good.

Top Hack #1: Bring some of your own snacks

It's easy to throw in a bag of nuts, a jar of almond butter (put in a suitcase if flying) and an apple or a banana. If you have access to a grocery store when you get to where you are going, even better, you can buy some healthy options (ie. fruit, healthy chips or crackers, nuts, veggies and hummus) when you arrive. Then, when you want a snack, grab one of these instead of the potato chips and onion dip.

Top Hack #2: Check out the menu before you go to the restaurant

When you've chosen where you are going to eat, go online and look at their menu. Take some time to see what the options are and what the best fit is for you. That way, when you get there and you are tired and over hungry, you'll already know what you're getting and will feel good about it.

Top hack #3: Fill up on the good stuff

Sometimes dessert is the best part of the meal (if you are a chocolate lover like me!), and especially on vacation, you deserve it right?! If you've filled up on lots of good quality protein and lots of veggies, there's naturally going to be less room for a full piece of chocolate cake with whipped cream and strawberries.

Have you ever said, "I'm so stuffed, but this is SO good I'm going to keep eating!"? I certainly have! But being overstuffed really doesn't feel so good. So fill up on the good stuff and then eat a little less dessert. Share it with someone, take 1/2 of it home or leave 1/2 on the plate.

Coming home from a vacation where you have implemented some (or all) of these strategies is going to feel great. Instead of feeling like you have to completely start over, you'll just need a couple days of your regular eating and you'll be back to normal.

Happy summer and wishing you a wonderful weekend!

Christa 😊

Hi Reader, Happy Spring! It's still cold here in the Northeast, but the daffodils are blooming so spring MUST be coming! Do you ever have pesky symptoms that bother you? That's really a trick question because everyone does as one time or another. Well, I've always been one to want to dig in to find out why, and that's looking for what they call "the root cause". Most quick fixes (ie. OTC medications) provide a bandaid, but it's really important to know WHY whatever it is that's happening, is...

Hi Reader, We are more than halfway through January and I still feel like I'm slowly easing into the year. Anyone else feeling that too? The days are cold and gloomy here in the Northeast, and all I want to think about is being warm and cozy! What is the ultimate act of self-love? It's self-care. Why Self-Care? Because You're Worth It! ✨ In the hustle and bustle of life, it's easy to forget the most important person in the roomβ€”you! We go day in and day out taking care of our family, our...

Hi Reader, Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday! There is nothing I love more than the feeling of a new year and starting off with a clean slate. New ideas, new goals, new inspiration. With this, also comes the marketing of resolutions - "do this", "don't do that", there are so many words of advice coming at you all at once. It can be hard to ignore them because, if you are like me, I want to make the best choice for myself. This is the height of shiny object syndrome time....
